Cultural Competency at Paper Giant

Designing and implementing a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan

THE CHALLENGE

In 2022 Paper Giant committed to designing and implementing a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan, with the support and guidance of Reconciliation Australia, as a first step in building and investing in cultural competency for the business.

THE PROCESS

In a designated working group, meeting fortnightly over the course of 12 months, Samantha coordinated and facilitated a small working group to design and progress a Reconciliation Action Plan, which was endorsed and published by Reconciliation Australia in 2023. Through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Samantha led Paper Giant partnerships with First Nations experts to try to decolonise client projects and research practice.

THE OUTCOME

Paper Giant’s Reflect Reconciliation Plan is both a publication and an ongoing commitment to cultural competency. As a design agency working on stolen land, the project instigated accountable remuneration for First Nations experts and experiences, alongside the investment in learning and unlearning.
